Subject: Will be on noone's Top Ten list - either way

1st Set: Without much pause we're slammed right into "Jack." It's decent. The previous reviewer is correct; the sound is muddled and statically dirty. However, it's not that remote to deem it unlistenable. "West LA" is standard. "Uncle" and "Mexicali" are bright and accurately done, but not stand-outs. During the latter, we get some nice commentary from an young lady. "Row" and "Masterpiece" fit the tone of the set. Professionally, slightly subdued performances by a band holding back. "Bird" is lovingly simple, revolves around a single melodic thread...but is lucid enough to be very nice background music.
2nd Set: This is the first time I've experienced the 'Chinese New Year percussive ensemble,' if that is, in case, the reason for the "Drums" segment preceding any songs. The obvious choice is a bouncy "Iko." My goodness, we're dealing with drizzling dirt clogging up the audio pipes. "Playin" fits the momentum; however, the jamming is fetal and undeveloped. "Eyes" is at least active thanks to Brent's constant 'coloring' need. "Drums" is fine, though it sounds a bit messy. "Space" is rather aimless and did nothing for me. "The Wheel" is passable, (both meanings) "Watchtower" has at least a charcteristic, drunkenly energetic contentment. "Fantasy" Finally we get an above-average version. It feels like Jerry has woken from a whole-show slumber. Not outstanding, but solidly very good. It's amazing - the collective enrapturement. "NFA" is not as gloriously noisy as the previous song, but Jerry's riffs are nicely applied. Wow, at 6:07 the song just stops. It takes the crowd twenty seconds on how to initiate their (sloppy by 6:50-7:10) own. Kinda epitomizes the evening...one noteworthy song out of?... I mean, nothing's bad per se...
A wily intro of "US Blues" punctuates another Jerry theme of the evening: mild-mannered solemn singing...
"Sometimes," Jerry stated, "the band and the audience's perception of an evening completely varies." Tonight, it's evident to everyone that although this wasn't a bad show, it's not particularly noteworthy or urgent.

Subject: Bad sound
Subject: Bad sound
After having only listened to the Drumz --->Iko segment that opens the second set,and West L.A. i wasnt impressed. The sound on this show is a bit ..umm....muddled isnt the word im looking for but something similar lol. The overall quality of the show isnt that bad- definitly listenable , it just astounds me that even as late as the 1980's there are bad recordings still being made..lol. For an audience tape , this isnt too bad , espeically if you like the raw sounds of the show itself (i.e. the crowd , tuning between songs - which seems to so often get cut out on patched recordings).
You will find a bit of delight i think with Fantasy , but mebbe its jus me that gets a thrill out of hearing Brent and Jerry come together the way they do.
Not a bad sounding show , not a great sounding show.
